President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa announced the lifting of some Covid-19 limitations as part of the Adjusted Alert Level 1 in a speech to the country yesterday. Today is the first day of the new restriction (23 March 2022). In accordance with section 27(2) of the Disaster Management Act, 2002, the country’s Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, has gazetted the modified Covid-19 Alert Level 1 Regulations (Act No. 57 of 2002).

  • All international visitors travelling at South Africa’s ports of entry who have been completely vaccinated for Covid-19 must present a valid vaccination certificate upon arrival.

  • Unvaccinated travelers must present a certified certificate of a negative Covid-19 test, recognized by the WHO (World Health Organization), obtained not more than 72 hours before the date of travel while arriving at the Port of Entry.
  • Although no longer compulsory outside, masks will be required in public indoor areas such as stores, malls, offices, factories, taxis, buses, trains, and any other indoor public space.

  • At up to 50% of the venue capacity, all meetings restricted to those who can present a valid vaccination certificate or a valid proof of a negative COVID-19 test are permitted.

  • Indoor gatherings with no requirement for proof of vaccination or a valid vaccination certificate will be limited to 1000 people or less, and outdoor gatherings will be limited to 2000 people or less. In this case, if the space is too small to accommodate the required number of people standing at least one meter apart, no more than half of the venue’s capacity may be used, subject to strict adherence to all health standards and social distancing measures.
